Gaziantep is in the area of south-east Anatolia that borders the Mediterranean region.  It shares borders with: Şanlıurfa to the east, Adıyaman in the north-east, Kahramanmaraş in the north-west, Osmaniye in the west, Hatay in the south-west, and Kilis and Syria in the south.

Heights above sea level in the province range from 250-1,250 metres, with an average height of 850 metres.  Approximately 52 % of the surface area is mountainous, and 27% is covered by plains.

The province of Gaziantep stretches from the Sof, Sam and Dülükbaba mountains which are a continuation of the south-eastern Taurus Mountains, decreasing in height towards the Euphrates Valley.  To the west, the province is bordered by the Ganibaba and Sarıkaya mountains, and flatter areas consist of the rolling plains of İslahiye, Barak, Araban, Yavuzeli and Oğuzeli.

The main watercourses are the Euphrates River, which separates the province from Şanlıurfa, its neighbour to the east; and the Afrin, Nizip, Merziman, Karasu and Alleben Streams.

With the dam lakes of Birecik and Karkamış; the small lakes of Zülfikar and Burç in the province capital; and the Çakmak, Nogaylar, Balıkalan and Gözlühöyük ponds in Nurdağı county, the province is now something of a "lake district".

Gaziantep has nine counties: Şahinbey, Şehitkamil and Oğuzeli in the capital; Nizip, İslahiye, Araban, Yavuzeli, Nurdağı and Karkamış in the surrounding area.
The province has an area of 6,222 km2 and a total population of 1,560,023.
